Glamour x Funk: Meet Kym Williams

It's Women's History Month and we are chatting with a few funky sweethearts whose styles we love. Each woman is very different from the other; collectively they embody Nakimuli: The Funky Sweetheart.

Kym is a NYC stylist who hails from Cali. (She's even styled several of our recent shoots.) We love Kym; she remixes her glamorous style by adding some of that Nakimuli funk! Kym's uncompromising appetite for simply "the best" out of fashion and life, makes her the kind of girl we would love to become. (Or at least become friends with.)

What was the first item that made you fall in love with Nakimuli?
First items I saw that made me fall in love with Nakimuli were the giraffe print leggings and the dookie bracelets. I was obsessed.

How would you describe your style?
Hmm...I mean...I love a lot of different genres of fashion. And they oftentimes get combined and meshed together. I also hate being put in a box...but if I HAD to describe my style I’d say 1980s Dynasty/ Dorothy Zbornak/ Robin Givens Boomerang/ Peggy Bundy/ Jerry Hall for Mugler circa 1997. Lol.

Who are your style icons?
My style icons are designers. Gianni Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, Coco Chanel, Rei Kawakubo, Thierry Mugler, Alber Elbaz, Christian Dior and many more. The original creators of all styles and trends.

What fashion/beauty trends are you loving at the moment?
My favorite trend right now is definitely inspired by Japanese designers such as Rei Kawakubo, Issey Miyake, And Yohji Yamamoto. Wide leg crop pants, moto jackets, oversized, avant-grade looks.

What fashion rule do you love to break?
The rules do not apply.

What is the best advice you ever received?
It wasn’t really advice...but rather a goal that a friend of mine set for herself. I asked her how she got into wardrobe styling and she said she started out by assisting. And she told herself that by the end of the year she wanted to see her name as the Wardrobe Stylist and not the assistant. She made that goal for herself and she achieved it. I eventually made that goal for myself having been inspired by her story...and I achieved it.

What is your fashion/beauty philosophy?
When you exude good vibes and radiate light...the light will be reflected back to you. Let your beauty be seen from the inside out.

Who has had a major influence on you and your style?
My mama. She showed me through her beauty rituals what glamour and style consisted of. Watching her get dressed, the way she styled her hair and fixed her makeup. The older I get the more I realize the huge influence she had on developing my ideas of fashion and style.

What are 3 things you can't live without?
Girl...Eyelashes. Ruby woo and Mademoiselle Chanel. Point. Blank. Period.

If you could go back in time, what era would you go to?
I would say the 90’s but I was raised in the 90’s so I think I’d rather go to an era I did not experience. Probably the 50’s or 60’s. I wanna go back to an era where people got dressed to the nines everyday. When women would walked around with big hats, gloves and heels on just to go to the grocery store.

What is your guilty pleasure?
I have A LOT of guilty pleasures. Like...we talking food? Jewelry? Snacks? Lol. I’ll settle and say vintage jewelry for this question.

What is one thing most people would be surprised to know about you?
Probably that I am very reserved and private. In an era where everyone is over sharing the details of their lives, I am the exact opposite. Some like to brag but I prefer my privacy.

What is the last thing you googled?
I googled?? Let’s see...Judy Evans. Which was the costume designer for the one of my favorite hit TV shows...The Golden Girls.

What is one of your most proudest moments?
Most recently, I’m super proud of moving into my own apartment. Having my own space is very special to me.
